John Beals probably came to South Jersey as a single man, perhaps as early as 1675, In 1682, under the care of Chester MM, PA, he married Mary Clayton, daughter of William and Prudence (Lankford) Clayton. About 1702, with the encouragement of William Penn and his agent, James Logan, a number of descendants of William and Prudence Clayton and other members of Chichester and surrounding Meetings occupied an area in far southwest Chester County, PA which had been laid out as the Nottingham Lots. William Penn was seeking to establish a claim to this territory which was being contested by the Calvert Family, proprietors of Maryland. John and Mary (Clayton) Beals and family moved to Nottingham about this time.
