Joseph discovered when he was 40 years of age, in 1827, the original spelling of the Chedsey name and changed his name back to CHEDSEY from CHIDSEY. His father , Nathan, was buried as a Chedsey, as he died after the name change by his son.

In 1841, Joseph and his wife went to Marshall, Michigan, when his son Charles Phillips moved there; Charles returned to Conn. soon, but Joseph stayed for several years. [ 1850 Census has J. Chedsey listed in Marshall, Calhoun County, 286, also in 1854.] He was President of the New England Society of Marshall, Mich. and was known as Major Joseph Chedsey. The youngest daughter, Helen, died four months after her return from Louisiana, where she had been employed as a teacher."
