After Joseph Chidsey Nichols died in 1844, Adeline placed her three boys in the guardianship of two uncles.   Joseph went to live with Rev Charles Nichols and William and Franklin went to live with Humphrey Nichols.   All the boys were found on the 1850 census living with their uncles.   However, the boys decided that they no longer wanted to live with their uncles and their families and all three boys left Connecticut before the 1860 census.
