Joseph discovered when he was 40 years of age , in 1827, the original spelling of the Chedsey name and changed his name back to CHEDSEY from CHIDSEY. His father , Nathan, was buried as a Chedsey, as he died after the name change by his son. In 1841, Joseph and his wife went to Marshall, Michigan, when his son Charles Phillips moved there; Charles returned to Conn. soon, but Joseph stayed for several years. [ 1850 Census has J. Chedsey listed in Marshall, Calhoun County, 286, also in 1854.] He was President of the New England Society of Marshall, Mich. and was known as Major Joseph Chedsey. The second Helen " died four months after her return from Louisiana, where she had been employed as a teacher." |
